Harold Edwin Hippisley
The Germans referred to the Battle of Langemark as “The Massacre of the Innocents at Ypres” in reference to their losses; however they themselves proved more than capable of inflicting casualties to their enemies.
As the outnumbered British were pushed back the Gloucesters found themselves blocking the Langemark-Koekuit Road. They mowed down the Germans in droves but still they came.As Pte Barton, who survived that day, recalls:
“About this time(1030 am) Lt Hippisley, the platoon commander, was hit. The bullet struck the middle of the forehead. He was attended by his servant,Pte Brown, who was inder the impression that if he kept the brain from oozing out of the hole he would be all right. After a time he was convinced that the wound was fatal and that his master had no chance. He then divided his time between the parapet, where he would fire a few rounds, and then return to Lt Hippisley.Between his concern for his master and his desire for revenge on the Germans,he seemed to have gone crazy!!”
He is listed on Panel 22 and 34 of The Menin Gate Memorial
